Just to add to everyone else's comments, Boston is a great, liveable city, once you deal with the high cost of living and the crazy drivers.
I've lived here for 10 years, and have done both the city (South End) and semi-burbs (Brookline Village). The cost of living, if you are thinking of buying is a lot to swallow...but as mentioned before, rents have come down a bit.
As for public schools, many of the surrounding towns have excellent school districts that pay pretty decently. A good friend of mine teaches for the Brookline school district and loves it. Paid well as a teacher, but lives close by in West Roxbury (one town over, and part of Boston proper) which helped bring the cost of living down.
You will find high quality schools all throughout the greater Boston area (Newton, Brookline, Cambridge, Wellesley, Wayland, etc.) and even further out, you'll still do pretty well.
When I lived in the South End, I had a garage spot in the John Hancock garage...24 hr in and out, $265 a month...it's gone up since then. On street parking...get ready for bumper damage, as it's tight, and it SUCKS when it snows.
I moved to Brookline to gain deeded parking and more square footage (I work in the Back Bay). The T, although people complain, is pretty good if you live on the Green or Red Lines....I bought almost 5 years ago now, and real estate prices are STILL going up.
Expect $1400-$2000 for a 1 BR in the city, and the same for a nice 2 BR with parking in Brookline/Cambridge/Newton. As for buying, crappy condos in the city start at $250/275K for a 1 BR, and a 2 BR will run at LEAST $400K. It really sucks if you are a first time buyer coming to the city now.
That being said, you have great restaurants, nice beaches 1 hr away, skiing 1 1/2 hrs away, great museums, and tons of history.
Cheers,
Paul H.
