Mine is in the shop today. I was offered and did take a loaner car. I think that it might be a dealer thing. Because when I had my car in for the major services the dealer still provided a loaner car. I always had to request one in advance. What did change is now they are charging $5.00 for gas no matter how much you use. I don't think that I will use that much even at todays prices, so they said I can fill it up myself and not be charged the $5.00. The $5 deal seems fair enough to me. Before they would ask people to fill up the car before they return it, but I am sure that some folks did not.
