this... do you stop at a traffic light if you SEE no one else in the area ?
If you say yes then the police had a reason to give you a ticket. If you say no, I would suggest you consult the laws in your state regarding these matters.
Suppose it wasn't the middle of the night but the parking lot was deserted anyway, would you have done the same ? If not then why would you do it in the middle of the night ? Did the laws expire after 11pm in that parking lot ?
Traffic laws are just that. They do not have to be reasonable nor convenient or .... (you can fill in the blanks). We could debate all days about speed limits and blah blah..... Yes, I think 55MPH on some highways are ridiculous but if I go over the speed limit and get caught, I pay the fine. How about drag racing on public roads ? Do you do that too ? If so, I would suggest you find a local official drag strip instead of someone's backyard.
People agree on a set of rules and laws to live by. There are plenty enough people think they are better and smarter, hence they don't have to obey certain laws. Are these people right ? Did you own any Enron, Qwest stocks or were you on their management teams ?
If your intend is to practise your winter driving skills, find places that offer winter driving schools and don't do that on public or other people's parking lots. If you own a big private fenced-in lot with no neighbors, then by all means invite us over and we'll have a ball 8-). I think you get the picture.
