If they were that much of jerks, you could said "yeah call your lawyer" and settle with their lawyer when they contact you and don't get involved any more than that. You are still refunding the same amount (to the lawyer or thru their lawyer) and didn't loose anything, but your ex-tenants has just spent that refund to get a lawyer:)
BTW, if they were little bit smarter, they wouldn't go thru the lawyer, but just go straight to small claims court....
Oh well, I guess learn from this event (I don't want to call it an error) and I would add more "clause" in your tenant-landload contract that you make them sign. - And make them sublet their apartment and make them responsible for everything during their lease period.
