and there is nothing wrong with leaving the dog in the crate while you are not there.
We do this with both our dogs and they are fine. They just go to sleep. We always give them a treat when putting them in. We just say "crate" and they bolt for their "houses" and we give 'em a treat and they lie down happy. They are crated each nite and are out of the crates during the day if we are here. The breeders we got them from do the same.
You might also want to spend more time "bonding" with the dog. Go for walks, play with him/her, get to be a pal. Do some obedience training, too, as this lets the dog know you are in charge and dogs need this. You have to be the alpha dog. It may take a few weeks to get it all to work, but you'll have a happy dog, and you'll be happier about it too.
Good luck.
