we find that our guys will happily hang out with us, but sometimes they just go into their crates and sit by themselves. They go in and out at will. We crate them at night and when we leave the house. We come home and they are asleep in their crates. Both crates are in the adjoined kitchen/familty room, so they can see us while inside. All the long-term dog people we know, including pros like breeders and other AKC folks-- tend to agree that crating is good for the dog and it's people. Your dog's anxiety issue will fade, but it will take some time, patience and developing trust between you and the dog.
Good luck!
Noel
