For the most part Dignan the <1year old beagle/pointer(?) has been a very good dog since we got him last week. He has exhibited some slight symptoms of separation anxiety when left alone. It seems that he has already established a strong bond with my wife and I. There are no "dominance" issues to speak of. He goes in and out of the crate freely. We do not use it for punishment, but we have put him in there with the gate closed so that he realizes that it's okay not to be in the same room with us. It was a little traumatizing for me and Dignan last friday morning when I put him in the crate and closed the door. I ended up letting him out of the crate after 5 minutes of constant barking and scratching at the door.
Thus, my problem is not that he doesn't like the crate, but that he doesn't like it when we leave in the morning. I will note however, that his anxious behavior was much more pronounced while he is in the crate. I want to modify his behavior so that I my leaving doesn't trigger this panic response. I realize this takes time and patience, which I am willing to give. I just wanted to know if anyone has had success with techniques to make their dog comfortable with being left alone, crate or no crate. I appreciate everyone's interest thus far.
Thanks,
Tim and Dignan
