His seat back broke while rear ended, sitting at a red light in a Fiat 124 Spider. His body went horizontal, and the top of his head hit the bulkhead between the trunk and passenger compartment. Compressed vertebrae. He spent weeks in the hospital, being stretched with a halo clamp drilled into his skull. But, he loved that Fiat. So, with the insurance settlement, he bought another Spider. Lightning can strike twice. He was rear ended again. Same design. Same resulting type of seat failure and top of the head into the trunk wall. This time, though, the recovery was not so good.
So, I have to ask. Who thought that seat backs giving way could be a good thing? What is the expected benefit? One of the superior aspects of three European makes in past was the strength of their seats compared to the American and Asian competition. (Same for roofs.) The latter seats were only designed to look good and get by the short term feel good part of the sales drive at the new car dealer's lot.
