Bulletin Boards such as this badly distort the picture for Saabs (or any other car). People who have an issue to discuss will post questions. People who have perfectly reliable cars won't post because they don't have anything to ask questions about. As a result, the percentage of problems seems far, far higher judging from the posts than in real life.

The Saab 9-5 has made Consumer Reports' list of most reliable used cars for a couple of years now, beginning with the 2000 model year. When Saab made the transition from the 9000 to the 9-5, GM spent something like $750 million refitting and updating the factory in Trollhatten bringing up to the state of the art (this is why the 9-5's reliability has improved so immensely). I don't know the stats on the 9-3, but I have no reason to believe it is any different. For example, others on the board have pointed out Saab is now the most reliable European brand according to JD Powers.

I have no doubt that a Lexus, statistically speaking, will be more reliable than a Saab. But Saab's reliability is vastly improved and really isn't a problem at this point.

Remember, too, that statistics are an average, and individual experiences can differ considerably. There are people out there enjoying trouble-free Passat's, and there are people out there with Camry's constantly under repair. Your odds, statistically, of buying a trouble-free Camry are higher than buying a trouble-free Passat, but sometimes it works the other way around.

Saabs are great cars - lively and fun to drive, unique, and as safe or safer than any other car on the road. Relative to the marketplace, Saabs are also a very good value.

That's why you should buy a Saab.
