Today my 9-3 went in to the dealer because the heater fan is hitting something and the thermostat went out so there is no heat. Waiting to see the final result tomorrow but it is a CPO so won't cost me anything. It is hard to blame those things on anything but the car.
I have spent $100/month for the last 24 months maintaining my '91 9000 CD. Most of it is just things failing due to old age repaired mostly by a good indie. I have spent $8000 on it since 1998 (seven years). Everything works on it except the drivers heated seat but that costs $ if you are not a mechanic. I can't part with it because it is such a nice car.
The bodies and the interiors are great and seem to last forever. The mechanicals do not. The new ones are better mechanically but the ACC, heaterboxes, DI's and electronics are not better and fail. There is nothing you can do about it. But that is true with all modern cars. I am starting to think lease or own with good warranty. But that elimiantes the 900's and 9000's. For those you just have to love 'em and fix 'em.
