The rider is certainly at fault for not anticipating the boneheaded moves of the Saab driver. However, the driver did turn into the rider's path. Failure to yield the right of way, inb my book.
As for people complaining on this forum about a cyclist's riding style, I must disagee. Just because you're on a bike doesn't mean you should have to crawl along. I hear lots of complains about slow cyclists, but when a cyclist actually keeps up with traffic, he's going too fast? Nonsense.
As for the comments about lycra, that's pretty lame. Go to any suburban shopping mall if you want to see major fashion disasters. Road cyclists in lycra are nothing new. I think some doth protest too much ;)
It's a shame that this driver had to learn the hard way about safety around cyclists, and although the rider seems a bit of a jerk, I'm glad he didn't get seriously hurt. Anyone who's ridden a bike in traffic and had a close call will agree, I'm sure. I think the driving tests should include a few laps around the test track on a bike with cars wizzing by - no better way to reinforce safety than to put yourself in the other guys shoes.
Just my 4 cents (2 for driver, 2 for MTB & road cyclist).
