I know what you mean. It is hard to describe the exact components of a sweet shifter, but it's obvious when it's in your hand. Short throws are important ie 1-N-2 shift should be ~3", roughly the excursion of wrist extension to flexion- not needing much if any elbow movement. This is the function of the shifter mechanism. The shift should be easy-not requiring too much force- but positive about the end point. This is the function of the synchronizers and shifting forks & other innards. The lubricant selection can make a big difference. The best part of Saab shifting is the clutch- just great feel, &smooth, positive engagement.
Our Volvo T5 shifter stinks but the tranny parts seem fair. The Mustang feels very heavy-duty and good synchros but is barely fun and can't be done quickly. A Honda Civic a Miata tied for the best shifter ever but on pretty low power cars. The Corvette with the Borg-Warner T10 was very sturdy but feels almost agricultural. VW EuroVan was vague, heavy and industrial. There's a buch more - but you're right- the Saab is terrific when it is right.
