The carmakers can't please everyone with their shifters. I'm not too fussy.
I like my classic Saab's shifter. Most of the time (It's getting a lot of miles on it and I need to "first before reverse" to help the synchros). Changing the transmission oil helped shifting speed nicely.
I like 9-5/9-3 shifting too. They are a little more rubbery, but that's OK. Personally, the "throw" distance isn't critical to me, since I sit close enough that it isn't too far. The smoothness and lightness has a lot to do with the power of the vehicle too.
The easiest and most predictable manual I have ever dealt with was the 5 speed in my old 87 b2000 mazda pickup, which has been retired to due rust and engine trouble. Wimpy motor with a quality Japanese 5 speed was so easy to shift even without a tachometer. I would often shift without using the clutch just to impress friends and family. The sound of the engine was the tachometer.
The 4-speed in my E-type is very agricultural as people say. Slow and heavy and mechnical feeling, but its part of the whole experience of having a special car and I wouldn't change it if I could. (And it can be done easily).
