My understanding is that every Saab prior to the 9000 had the ignition in the centre console. They changed it for the 9000 because so many people complained about it. Then people complained that it wasn't there, so it went back with the next model, the '94 900.

There actually are good reasons to have it in the centre console, it's not just an "oddity".
