Some swear by them, others at them. The pellets aren't as cheap as they used to be. Do you have room to store a couple of ton's of pellets in bags? Is your area subject to power failures?
I live in the foothills of the eastern Berkshires on western Mass. I installed a large wood stove in the basement when building the house (2400 sq ft, living on 3 levels)years ago. We burn wood when the temp drops below the mid twenties(F). I usually fire it up when I get home and load it again before bed. It'll keep some residual heat throughout the day. I installed it not only as supplemental heat, but also as insurance during winter storm power outages. Last year we had an extended period hovering for two weeks between -15F and +15F. One particular night the power went out at 10pm when it was -15F and the wind was blowing 40-50mph. I stoked up the stove and lit the gas fireplace in the rec room and went to bed. The power didn't return until 7am. When I awoke at 6am the house was cozy (but still dark) so I fired up my generator to power the water pump, coffee maker, lights and TV, took my shower etc.
Two of my neighbors have pellet stoves and both require electricity to keep running. Both of their ranch houses dropped into the low 50's by morning because the stoves electric powered feeders couldn't run. I'd need to find a way to overcome this problem without having to run my generator all night.
Let us know how it goes.
regards
Peter
