Before we met, my wife had a grey Abbie mix named Smokey. This was a seriously smart cat. She would squirt Smokey with a spray bottle when the cat would scratch at furniture or eat plants. Then the spray bottle would start to go missing - it was a sort of "now, what did I do with that?" until she saw Smokey hanging onto the handle with her teeth, dragging it behind the couch.
The spray bottle wouldn't work for every situation, though. She had a chive plant in a pot on the top of the refrigerator. Smokey leapt to the top of the refrigerator (from the floor!) and started nipping at the tips. She started spritzing the cat and, with each spray, the cat would put its ears back and chomp more willfully on the plant. The end result was one saturated cat and a plant eaten down to stubble.
Who says that pets aren't like their people :-)
