The Great Tire Pressure Debate

OK so I have just gotten back from the shop after having the tires rotated, balanced and pressured. The shop warned me that the tire pressures were very low and I should keep an eye on it. (Side note: I check my tire pressures about 1 every 2 weeks or so or when necessary) I had checked the pressures last week and got the tires to the pressure on the inside of the door. The shop I was at informed me that the pressures on the door are good for FACTORY tires, but any tires that differ from the factory one should follow the pressure ratings on the sidewall. In this case, the sidewall is 40 psi and the door is 32/28 (For a 2002 WRX wagon the tires in question are Dunlap winter sport M2's for those interested). The question I pose is who is right? I have always gotten mixed messages from everyone I ask. Any comments are welcome, Thanks!!!
