Your standard practice is correct CmacD - follow the car's door sticker, then perhaps add a couple pounds as others suggest. There is so much ignorance in America I cannot stand it!! The car mfg engrs calculate what's best. It's an optimum setting for ride and handling, but can be increased for owner's preference. (ie; more pressure: better handling, harsher ride). The tire sidewall number is for absolute safe inflation to keep the tire shop dudes from blowin their furshlugginer heads off when installing tires - NOT FOR DRIVING!
BEST RULE: Set all your own pressures with a decent $10 gage, based on sticker and your preference, NEVER let anyone else do it, and check 'em once a month.
