Another one in the ongoing debate about Saabs future in Sweden or Germany or somewhere else.
Anders
TROLLHÄTTANS DESTINY IS DECIDED ON FRIDAY.
This Friday the race is over – again – in Trollhättans battle against Russelheim.
That’s when the Opel board of directors and the German Metal Union IG are having a combined media conference in Russelheim regarding the “agreement for the future”.
Citing some German press information, that is when the factory, where Opels cradle ones stood, is awarded to become the developing center for General Motors (GM) for the middle class cars, and where also the Saab 9-3 is going to be made.
As compensation, Trollhättan will receive the manufacturing of the Cadillac BLS as earlier mentioned by GM.
This is what the highly regarded German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported on Monday, citing different sources from the negotiation delegation. The news paper has several times before reported about the different factors in the German negotiations that now, at the end, are pointing toward that GM are choosing Russelheim before Trollhättan.
“SPECULATIONS”
But just as before, the union came back on Monday, strongly denying everything.
- No agreement has been reached and nothing has so far been signed said the chairman of the Union, IG Metal, Klaus Franz to the news bureau DPA and he called the FAZ:s allegations as “pure speculations”.
He did confirm though that it is going to be a combined press conference on Friday and that the negotiations continued on Monday.
A spokes person for Opel at the same time said that, negotiations are ongoing with GMs board.
Citing FAZ, both sides are in agreement to lower the work force at Opels German factories with 9000 people up to year 2010.
Already in 2007 the work force should be 6000 less and the remaining 3000 will disappear in 3 years after that, due to early retirement and part time employment.
DEMANDS GUARANTEES
With this agreement, GM would be able to reduce the work force at Opel with 25 percent up to 2010.
To agree on this, and also agree on lowered salaries, IG Metal has demanded during the negotiations, which have been going on since this summer, that none of the three factories in Russelheim, Bochum and Kaiserslautern should be shut down. The news paper Handelsblatt wrote on Monday that, that type of guarantees are just part of the agreement that is most likely to be cleared over the coming week.
The “weathered” board of the Metal club (union) at Saab in Trollhättan didn’t on Monday know anything about the press conference in Russelheim this upcoming Friday.
The chairman, Paul Åkerlund is careful with keeping the German negotiation agreements, and Opels and Saabs status report, which was delivered to GM this November, apart.
- But then again, you can’t rule out that they are not going to deliver a decision on both things, he says, of what could be expected this Friday.
