I always fly CO unless I do not have a choice. Although I vaguely knew not to pack valuables in checked luggage but I never seriously thought about it. And I never think twice about putting it in the checked bag either if there happens to be no room in the carry on. In the past two to three years not a single incidence occurs with CO in no less than 25 trips. I honestly forgot which trip I pack the camera bag in the luggage and which other trips I had it in my carry on. It was irrelevant because nothing ever happened to it.
Two things stand out in this January trip to St. Croix, USVI.
1) I flew with both CO and AA. Booked separately myself with respective airlines. Normally I only fly with one carrier. I did it to save client money. I like to stick with CO because I routinely get upgraded. Since from San Juan to St. Croix all carriers use a small plane and it is only 40 minutes I thought I did the right thing, saving client money and fly in comfort.
2) I found a TSA notice in the checked bag upon arrival at the hotel in St. Croix saying my bag has been searched. This has never ever happened to me before.
