appliances. This is a valid measure for most consumers, but not for car enthusiasts. Safety and reliability are all CR really focuses on, with reliability being paramount. I recall looking up a car on CR a few years back. It was an Olds Intrigue, which was actually a pretty nice car (I put 3K+ miles on a couple of rentals--long road runs). They rated it well, but noted it had "disappointing crash results" for the front and rear seat passengers (not the driver). I went to the NHTSA site to see the crash results to find that in the type of collision tested, the front and rear passengers would probably die. Yeah, I'd say that was disappointing. But the car was a CR recommended car.

While CR is very objective, IMO it is carried to an extreme. But it is OK, given their mission of rating consumer products. Plus the Japanese cars (at least Toyota and Honda) have raised the bar so high for reliability that it is hard for any other make to look good. They are good cars. They don't break very often. And if you are looking for a transportation appliance, CR will tell you which is best. Just like they tell you which TV or microwave to buy. But like your TV or microwave, they have no soul. And "soul" to a gearhead, is pretty important.

But Kings of the Road? Not in my book. I've rented too many Toyotas to be impressed, and I don't fit in Hondas very well. What I want is a Saab with Toyota Camry reliability. That would be King of the Road.

Enough ranting! Just my 2 or 3 cents.
