To all faithful/loyal Saab fanatics and to everyone else...
I'd like to gently remind everyone why we drive Saabs (or put up with Saabs)...
Saabs are not the most reliable cars on the road today. Data will show that. How many of us can honestly say that we have driven our car from new to 100k miles, paying less than $500 in non-wear and tear 'breaks' and also avoided the expensive dealer paid maintenance services at 50k, 60k, 70k, 80k, 90k, 100k intervals? (I can't, because I haven't owned one since new. But I can say that I've owned other brands new vehicles, driven past 100k miles without once going in for dealer recommended maintanance and only done oil changes, brakes, tires and paid less than $500 in out of pocket expenses for stuff breaking out of warranty.) Once the warranty runs out on the Saab, people in the right minds should look for something else to drive, IF they do not want to sink money in their Saab. Skimming through these boards, usual items of Saab failures before 100k seems to be DI, turbo, headgasket (retorque), and even the engine (sludge and other issues). I personally had a catastrophic engine failure on a 70k mile NG900 SET(rod seized, putting a hole in the block).
Still, why do I drive a Saab? Why are we so loyal to Saabs?
I think this question has been reiterated many times on this board, if anything, to urge other Saabers to 'keep on Saabing'. We drive Saabs because we like Saabs. For some reason, the benefits of owning Saabs far outweigh the inconvenience of having to give these cars so much attention and resources. Some Saab owners have had better luck with their cars than others. But in the end, I think most of us are here, because we just like 'em. Safety/economy/utility/styling/performance/uniqueness whatever the reason, we like Saabs. We like Saabs so much that paying $1000 in headgasket job is an 'investment', not an expense. An 'investment' in the Saab, so we can drive it another 100k miles before another headgasket, unless there's another 'investment' to be made before. May be one day, we will 'wake-up' to find similar sex-appeal from another brand, may be even a Japanese brand that will need less 'investment'. But until then, I guess I'll just keep liking Saabs and keep driving 'em and urge other Saabers to 'keep Saabing'.
Heh, heh. Please take this message lightly :)
