Albany, NY to NH on snow-covered rural roads through the Berkshires and SW New Hampshire in lousy visibility. There was little traffic and I had no trouble at all in my 9000 with 4 snows. AWD would have made some of the roads a little easier to deal with, but it was basically a 150+ mile ride without drama in 10 degree weather and sometimes whiteout conditions. No big--It was actually a fun ride.
I *could* have used AWD when I got home at 11:15. My 135 foot uphill driveway was full of 4" to 8" of fresh wind-packed pow--but my second try got me to where I needed to be.
Noel
I think AWD *can* be a real benefit, especially when starting from a stop on a hill and for some cornering (even at normal speeds). It's also good for people who are intimidated by bad weather. But I don't think it is necessarily worth the fuel penalty (but then I'm a cheapskate and kinda environmental). Driving carefully in a FWD car with 4 snows, maybe traction control, and taking your time in bad weather gets you there just fine.
I passed two box trucks and a couple of cars on the big hill from NY to MA (in Nassau?)
