AWD is very useful when driving through very deep snow, or muddy, unpaved roads or trails.
If you ever see ads for AWD vehicles, they all seem to be off-road. The implication is that they are better on an ice-covered highway, but only an implication. In stop and go traffic, ABS is better than AWD. After all, most cars since the 1940's have had four wheel brakes.
I think AWD is sold because folks like the thought that if they wanted to, they too could drive over unimproved trails to their cabin in the woods. Now, all they need is the cabin. The woods would be helpful, too.
Hummer had (still has?) an ad saying "If you can, maybe you will." That is it exactly - yes, you never drive off-road, but if you can, maybe you will. I think Nissan talks about how family vacations are so much better with the 7 passenger AWD Whatever, and it always shows the fishing camp.
AWD is very useful. But for the 90% of vehicles where Off-Road consists of backing over the flower bed, AWD is unnecessary. But it feeds into folks self image.
