Wow, David, we have a few things in common, but I'll even go you one further, perhaps. Especially because of our two young kids, I definitely did not want to struggle over anything. I followed my lawyer's advice generally, but didn't nitpick. She kept the house, and I took only about 40% of the equity, even though she was the one having the affair with the surgeon (I was the "injured party"). I was a stay-at-home dad, and needed to suck-up my rage, completely get re-focused and on my feet, but at the same time, I needed to salvage any modicum of honor and dignity. The way I did it was to just be kind, gentle, overly understanding (understanding?), totally take the high road, somehow, even through relinquishing of assets. Now 3 years on, the kids have adapted with amazing resilience, and my ex in-laws are often confiding in me as my ex-wife is now preparing for divorce #2. So GM, I would wait it out with the ring if you can. I think the first thing one wants to do is to get the weight of that ring off of your finger, and then contemplate it, and what to do with it. I've put my wedding band on my right hand, I like the click it makes when I shift gears. Plus, it serves as an impetus, sometimes, to talk plainly, honestly with the kids about marriage and divorce. Things seem pretty amicable with you guys? I would try to find another way to get her what she needs in these first days. Things will be alright. Post again and let us know how you are doing.
