I tried to give the ring back to the ex when we were splitting up, but he was gallant and said he'd bought it for me and I should keep it. Since he got the Porsche, a share of equity in my house, and the stocks, I didn't feel guilty though. Overall, he came out ahead in the deal, monetarily.
I struggled with what to do for a while (that whole symbolism thing, y'know.) Well - I sold it and bought a 9000T. :) I don't know if that was tacky or not....it didn't feel right to have it remounted into something else I could wear though.
As I recall, appraisal value is not even close to the resale value. I think mine was appraised at around $6,000. The realistic selling price was closer to $2,000. I think I sold it for about $2,300 in the end, a fair price for all parties.
I advertised it in the local paper. I met with the prospective buyers at a well known jewelers so they could have it looked at there, and be sure I wasn't scamming them. I think it would be difficult to sell a diamond online, I wouldn't buy one that way.
I am sorry you're going through divorce, that sucks. As others have said, hope you both take the high road with the possessions. It's just stuff. Ethics and doing the right thing are what's important.
Even with sucky credit, someone will sell your ex a car. It'll cost her high interest, but she'll have to start rebuilding her credit at some point...
