It's a fairly low-end model in the grand scheme of things ($675 on sale). I'm a novice and will likely do most of my riding on roads and paved bike paths in downtown Atlanta. I will be getting a second set of wheels and slicks for this purpose. I gave my old bike to charity because it weighed a ton. I rode Treks, Fishers, Specialized, Giant and the Cannondale. For the money the Cannondale offered the lightest bike but probably lower end components than I could have gotten for the same $$$ from a different manufacturer, but I wanted a frame that would last and if I get serious about biking on or off road I can upgrade components as they wear out or as I see a need. As it is I won't know the difference. I did not go for disc brakes as I don't forsee doing a lot of riding in muddy/wet conditions, or doing any serious downhill runs where they would be beneficial.
You are right, there are a ton of good bikes out there and I had a couple of friends helping me through the process otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue what I was doing. They both recommended a mountain bike with slicks over a hybrid because with two sets of wheels/tires it's a much more versatile setup. I also made sure I bought from a bike shop that I felt comfortable with. I needed a bike for when spring arrives to try to break the work, eat, drink, sleep cycle.
