I can't say that there's any bad advice being given here. Since you've ridden in the past, you'll probably know when you find what you're looking for. I'd add Klein to the list...as well as Trek. Klein is now owned by Trek, but their frames are still unique. I like the internal cable routing, their welds...and the amazing quickness of their aluminum frames.
The Klein Palomino full suspension is supposed to be great, and the Trek Fuel full susp. has been well-recieved... And I've never ridden anything as responsive as a Klein hard tail (Attitude).
I purchased my last MTB used and saved nearly 50%. YOu have to know what you want and what you're looking at though...
