I have always been a Specialized person. Have an old '91 Cro-Moly(sp) outfitted with the lold Shimano DX group. Also have a newer Stumpy but it is an Aluminum frame. Both are hard tails. While the aluminum frame climbs effortlessly its rigidity causes me endless rear tire snakebites (flats). I would say anything with a stiff frame would require full suspension or, if hard tail, at least a tubeless rear tire. I have never had that issue with frames having more flex, as with my old '91. But what's your price point? I know that Specialized has a race ready full suspension Stumpy at around $3500 and base models starting around $1100. Of course the numbers can always go up or down depending on how your going to outfit it.
