I kept my European Delivery 9-3 in Paris for about 6 months and drove it all over the continent. Get your maps here prior to departure and make sure you get some city maps for those that you will be passing through or visiting. When you get to certain countries that are not integrated into the EU, such as Austria, Czech Republic and possibly Hungary, you will be required to get a "country registration" sticker that must be purchased at the frontier. These are normally only a few dollar equivalents but one of the remaining bureaucratic hurdles when entering .
You will probably be on several toll roads. I have found that using the Credit Card lanes (Carte) is a good way to avoid backups and also conserve local currency. I was surprised in the Czech Republic to find that Euros were not widely accepted but the Korunas were accepted...and this was in a 4 star hotel.
Don't be afraid of taking on other traffic in the great city of Paris. Everyone should challenge themselves to at least one lap around the Arc de Triomphe and attempt to exit down the Champs Elyssee. A drive to the Eiffel Tower is mandatory as the city may ban auto traffic completely there in the next few years. Avoid the La Defense area of Paris as this is a confusing mess, even without the road construction.
The secondary roads through the countryside are not to be missed. Once you tire of the high speed "A" roads, you will find these side jaunts to be enjoyable with the ability to stop occassionally for excellent food and sightseeing.
Don't be offended when some big German Iron passes you on the left and then, without signaling, "drifts" halfway into your lane and straddles the lane markers. It just seems to be common driving practice that is annoying and dangerous. I found this practice to be more prevalent when I was driving a non-descript rental car....and almost non-existent when driving the Saab at higher speeds. Respect? Testosterone? Who knows?
You will have a great time and enjoy every minute of it.
Cheers...Charlie
