Haven't been to Budapest but it's gotta be a couple days of fairly solid driving from Paris. Unless you have lots of places you "have" to see between the two points, I would consider mixing driving with a high-speed train. For example, you can get from Paris to Cologne or other German cities via Brussels in a couple hours on the TGV. Then drive from whatever city you want to go from.
High speed "A" roads in France are excellent (speed limit 130 kph) but people run 140-145. At least 2 years ago, people were well mannered and it was easy driving. Most autobahns in Germany have limits now (about 130 or so) at least in some sections. The real country you likely want to see, though, just like here in the US, is on the little 2-lanes, which are wonderful in Europe.
I don't recommend driving in Paris. It's not hard, just more of a "why bother?" as parking is a PITA. Use cabs, the metro, and the Batobus.
Arrange your car rental online before you go. I find it is usually cheaper. The US companies are all fine, so is Europcar (better choices!). If I am renting a car, I usually buy separate trip insurance with a rider for a car (car coverage is usually required on rentals). It is cheaper and the trip coverage will save your butt if you run into airline delays or hassles. It's not expensive. It can also be less expensive to pick up a car at a train station versus the airport. You can find all this on the car rental web sites. Model selection maay not be as good, though.
Have fun!
