Saab started as an aircraft maker (SAAB: Svenska Aeroplan AB, essentially the Swedish Airplane Company). They made military aircraft, and they gave them model numbers in the 30s. At the end of WWII, Saab decided it needed to get into civilian markets. It produced two civilian aircraft, and to distinguish them from the military aircraft, it gave them model numbers 90 and 91.
Saab's next project was a car, the Saab 92. This was developed into the first production car, the 93. Saab then produced a sports car, the original Saab Sonett, with a prototype run of something like 9 cars. That was model number 94. The 95 was a four-door wagon, the 96 was a small two-door successor to the 93, and the 97 was a new Sonett. The 98 was a concept for a two-door hatchback based on the 95, but it never saw production. The 99 was a big step for Saab, the predecessor to the C900.
After 99, Saab decided to stick with the "9". It may have been because they had decided "9" meant civil, or because their brand recognition was already tied to the number 9. In any case, they called the next car the 900 (and sold a half-99/half-900 hybrid as a 90 in some markets). They followed that with a larger car, the 9000. Adding zeroes couldn't continue forever, so the 9-5 was born, followed by the 9-3. In the last couple years, we've seen the 9-2X and 9-7X (X designating AWD), and the 9-6X is on its way.
