It makes more economic sense to buy premium today than it did when regular gasoline was $1 per gallon.
Today, in Houston, I pay 9.1% more for 93 octane premium. ($2.39/$2.19 = 109.1%)
When regular gas was $1, I paid 20% more for premium. ($1.20/$1 = 120%)
To me, so long as the spread between regular and premium remains $0.20, the higher the price goes, the more likely I am to pay for the benefits of running premium gas in my turbocharged Saab.
On the other hand, if a car doesn't benefit from premium gas, I don't buy it. Our Pontiac minivan and Toyota Prius hybrid fall in this category.
