Viggen fillup = $40. Prius fillup = $20. I like that quite a bit.

Ours is a 2002 model. Considering the fuel consumption statistics, it's actually quite enjoyable to drive. The electric motor is quite torquey, so it's reasonable around town.

The ride is comfortable enough, and there's plenty of room for four passengers. We took 4 people on a day trip that involved 250 miles of driving, and we were quite comfortable. Trunk space is somewhat limited, since that's where the batteries live.

Since Toyota charges a lot of money for them, they equip them pretty nicely, including climate control and a nice stereo.

It has a cool 4 inch by six inch screen that tells what power source is being used, or, alternatively, shows the instantaneous fuel mileage and the average for each of the last 6 5-minute segements. The screen, with touch controls, is also used to control the stereo and, if so equipped, the navigation system.

It has a continuously variable transmission to help keep the revs at the most efficient level. Kind of a strange feature, it doesn't shift like anything you're used to, unless you ever had one of the old Buick Dynaflow cars.

The main objective of the car is fuel economy, so when I drive it, I find myself concentrating on driving in a way that promotes fabulous fuel economy. I can get 48 to 50 mpg around town. Highway mileage is less, because you don't get the advantage of regenerative braking, which slows the car by charging the battery.

For mostly highway driving, the VW TDI might be better, but, especially for an around-town car, I'd recommend the Prius to anyone.

Best regards,

Dave
