I would simply buy a new machine. It'll cost you about $100 to buy OS-X, and you really want to add some memory. I don't remember what you need to toss out, but I'll bet that to get to at least 128meg, you need to toss a 32 Meg SIM. And 128K is pretty weak - for 256meg, you'd need to buy the 256 (probably about $100) and toss the 32meg. And then you'd still have a slow machine.
Since you've got an iMac, you don't have an external monitor. So the Mini is a nice thought, but you'd need to buy a monitor. Yes, not very expensive, but a decent one is still $200.
If you want to save money, I highly recommend an eMac. For $795 you get a 17" screen, 256meg of RAM, combo drive, 40GB disk, and a 1.25Ghz G4. And it comes bundled with a bunch of software. I consider it a screaming deal. The only drawback of the eMac is that it does take up significant desk space, and isn't as sexy as the iMac. But it'll run OSX very fast and has a beautiful screen. My brother upgraded his 6500 to an eMac, and I can't get over how nice it is. And I'm running a 15" G4 Powerbook.
For $300-$400 bucks, you can probably get your iMac to run OSX, but it'll be creaky. For $800, you'll get a nice machine that'll run fast. If you want sexy, a new iMac runs about $1300. They are really pretty, but it's tought to beat an eMac deal.
I don't recommend the Superdrive, which allows DVD burning. It adds $200 to the price of the machine. You can easily buy external DVD burners for less than that today. And the DVD format is still developing - they are coming out with two-layer DVDs, which the Superdrive can't handle. And there are two competing two-layer formats. When I absolutely need a DVD burner, I'll wait for the dust to settle, and then pick up an external for $129.
