I run OS X on a G3 300Mhz with 192K RAM (early iBook) and it works but is slow.
On the classic iMac like yours OS 9 runs fast but you have the option of dual booting so you could install OS X and OS 9 and if you do not like OS X you can boot up into OS 9 instead. You need to sort out the RAM - as you have 96K you are using the 2 slots so one chip must be replaced - I suggest add 256MB. But this is not all: you must check the size of the hard drive as you should have at least 10GB in my opinion and those old iMacs sometimes only had 3GB!!
The old iMacs are great machines and reliable and so they have a second hand value. Your best bet may be to part exchange for an (ugly) eMac or set up a Mac Mini with separate screen. One site that deals in part exchange is http://www.powermax.com/index.html
In fact, they sell late model classic iMacs for little less than their original price!! It would be nice if SAABS depreciated at that rate!
