Hey guys, I know nothing about boats. However, my family has a small boat in storage that was passed down from my grandfather. Its only about 12' long, he made it himself out of wood like 50 years ago. It has a place for an outboard motor on it, and I'm trying to find out what kind of power would be needed to make the boat move at a reasonable speed. It would be used just to cruise around the local reservoir at say 5-10mph.
I think the boat weighs about 500lbs, its quite heavy (its wood). I found a formula online that says take the total boat/load weight and divide it by 70 to get an idea of the pounds of thrust needed. Would a battery powered "trolling motor" be sufficient to move the boat a few miles? Or are those just for maneuvering in close quarters? If I went with a gasoline engine, what would be a cheap entry level one to look at?
