When I was a toddler... Posted by IrieTom [Email] (#1032) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IrieTom) on Wed, 6 Apr 2005 22:29:44 In Reply to: First SAAB experience, jonathan, Wed, 6 Apr 2005 06:43:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My folks were shopping to replace their '60something VW bug with severe motor problems (kaboom) and my dad the economist heard good things about this unorthodox swedish car company. I must have been around 3 years old, because the car they bought was a '72 SAAB 96.
The stories I heard repeatedly were:
1) The car was almost crashed within 100 miles because of the reflexive "steer left when an oncoming truck passes by, so that you won't get blown off the road" instinct that a habitual VW bug driver acquires.
2) Little (irie)Tommy lobbying for the Mercedes SL in the showroom. "You don't need a back seat because I'm really small!" Obviously, 3-year-olds don't have a very good awareness of finance, practicality, or planning ahead...
The '72 got a younger sibling when my folks became a 2-car family and bought a '78 99L. Later (in '85-6 or so), the '78 was recalled by SAAB for a bad paint job (rust) and replaced by an '80 900GLi. Other family cars have included an '83 900 4dr, '86 900 4dr, '89 900 3dr, '91 9000, '01 9-3, and '01 9-5.
I have owned an '83 900T, '86 900T, and '86 SPG.
Unfortunately, I had to retire the SPG recently, and now only own a Chevy 2500 work truck (my friends do flawless double-takes when they hear this news.)
I guarantee that there will be another classic 900 hatchback in my near-future. Even though the truck is amazingly simple to work on, It isn't much fun to drive.
