Long distance certainly can work. My girlfriend and I were long distance for a year and a half. We had it easy, though...she was in NY and I was in Boston, and we'd see each other every other weekend, at least. She's been in Boston since August, and things are still great.
Obviously you're taken with this girl. It may or may not have any chance of working...but as long as you don't know for sure, you won't be able to get her off your mind. So give it a shot.
I'd say that you'll want to make plans to meet up with her soon. You can't know her that well from a few hours in the airport, but a long weekend together should help you figure out whether it's worth pursuing.
