I've had (and having) experience both bad and good.

With ex-GF/high-school sweetheart tried the long-distance (LD) thing, and it did not work out. My "plan" backfired on me, as I had the blinders on. Took my entire freshmen year from me, but on to bigger better things.

Current GF (future mrs./she's the one) and I have been together for 6+ years and are commuting back and forth. We lucked out, as we met at school (end of my Sophomore year, her Freshmen year). But summers then, and for the past 3-4 years we have been located at least 1.5 hours away. She's in Rochester (east-side) and I'm in Buffalo. Regardless of how close, we are still apart most of the time. And until I get my act together (and she gets a FT job - teacher), it will continue this way. ;o) We only see each other on the weekends, and *maybe* once during the week if we are lucky.

Lots of good, relative info posted already, but to echo those sentiments, it depends. Our weekends are taken, as one travels to see the other. This means not a lot of time to do other things (including working on the Saab). Major projects need to be "cleared" first to make room on the schedule. Spontaneous outings are not as frequent, as I can't play golf at the drop of a dime if I'm not in town, or if she is here. I also don't get to see her games but a few times (she coaches), and she no longer gets to see my games (only men's league hockey, but still) much.

But all of that is not bitter, or that either one of us is controlling. It is simply because we love each other and spending time together so much, that we have to sacrifice some things to be together. Phone calls every night amounting to about 2 hours spent over the phone each night, etc. So days, nights, and weekends are easily full. Our phone bills were outrageous even with cheaper LD (USA Datanet) and eventually, I put her on my cell phone plan so we could talk "unlimited." Email helped, as did IM. But yes, it still gets pricey with phone, gas, time, etc.

As always your mileage may vary! Regardless, there is no harm done in first trying to see how things go. Your in the "infant" stages, so no harm done. Best of luck to you!!! It is working for me. :o)

Sean
