This is consumer electronics and everything is discontinued on a regular basis. I often buy the model of something just being replaced as they are a much better value.
I have used various Canons and they are fine cams, although I think they are overly complicated compared to equivalent Nikons, but then I am a Nikon fan. Canon, Olympus and Nikon all have good lenses which it critical. Pros use those 3 brands, which does trickle down to the rest of us. The other Japanese companies aren't quite as good, in my experience.
I haven't used a Kodak, but people I've talked to like them. Some models have a dock that also lets you do (I think) dye sublimation prints much cheaper than inkjet ones. IIRC, some models also have German lenses (Zeiss?), which is a real plus.
In general, megapixels are a more is better thing...but only to a point. For most casual use 4 to 5 MP is fine. How many times are you going to print 11 x17 of anything? More MP do is give you additional detail, but it depends on your use.
Without knowing those models, I'd probably go with the Canon. The 512 card is important as it will hold more shots. The 128 card on the Kodak will not hold many 5 MP shots.
