with Round Up. That's probably about the same as the Ortho Product, but be aware that not all those defoliants work on poison ivy. Buy the concentrated version, add water. I use a pump sprayer that holds a couple of gallons--and that lets me work from a few feet away. Soak the leaves well--and hope it doesn't rain for a couple days.

For the runners on trees, cut out a section about 4" long in the stem on the trunk and the upper stuff will die. But remember every part of the plant is poisonous even 3 years years after it dies. Roots too, including the "air roots" it puts down on tree trunks.

Be aggressive about ripping up as much as you can *after* you've killed it with Round Up. FYI, the runners will go under a road and come up on the other side. They can go 50 ft underground before surfacing.

IIRC we had a guy come in and do a lot of it for us, as it was reaching jungle proportions--the PO of the house was old and had let it go crazy. Then we continue to hit it every year. It takes a few years to really get it under control, and you really can't get rid of all of it.

Lay in a stock of Tech Nu, a mineral spirits-based soap and wash your skin thoroughly with it after you've been working. The mineral spirits take out the oil that cause the rash. In a pinch, you can just use mineral spirits, but that's nasty stuff. You can get Tech Nu at hardware stores, Agway, garden stores, sometimes even Wal-Mart. Get the big bottle!

Then when you're done wash your clothes 2x or 3x as separate loads. Or wear stuff you can throw away if you are really going to be hip deep in the stuff.

Good luck!
