So, how much do you want to pay? That is the classic line I get from dealers. I usually reply - How about $1?
I agree, it's a way to generate traffic. And I am continually impressed by the ability to sell cars based on monthly payment. I make no insult against the salesmen - it's the consumers fault to be ill-informed.
I have some friends that buy cars based on monthly payments alone. "Gee, I got a good deal! I'm only paying $179 a month!" When I ask how much the car cost, I get a blank look. When I ask how long the loan is for, I get another blank look, but they think it might be paid off by 2043. They think they're bargaining for a car by getting the monthly payment down, not realizing that all they're doing is driving the term (and total interest) out.
These are the same folks that are impressed when the dealer offers them an astonishingly good price for their trade-in, and then tack it onto the price of the new car. But since they never look at the price of the new car, it doesn't matter.
