the key as Randy mentions in his other post has to do with the RIAA equalization used by a phono preamp...
You have 2 options.. If you have your stereo setup nearby your PC and your pc has RCA stereo input jacks on it.. then you can simply use a tape or aux out from your receiver.. which allows you to take advantage of your receivers phone preamp.
If not.. then there are some adapter devices out there as you mention that are designed to handle a phono signal.. which is different from the output of other audio devices.. (back to that RIAA thing! )...
then on top of that there are some software options that make it easier to edit and clean up the signal as mentioned previously...
Check out some of the audio and pc sites out there for discussions.. Try AVSFORUM.COM .. I seem to recall a review on this over the past few months...
