As a veteran of nearly 100 LP and casette tapes to CD, here is what I used.
* serious grade SAE pre-amp with adjustable gains and equalizer (nice, borrowed)
* Audacity 1.2 capture software (free) for editing and capture into WAV and noise removal
* Wave Repair (shareware / freeware version has what I needed) for detecting end of song
* Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
* P4/2.4 ghz machine
* Ho-Hum grade turntable (Pioneer with Shure stylus)
* very good tape deck (Denon, borrowed)
Capture everything, edit it, and burn in wav format, not MP3. Sure, takes longer...
Careful if you use a Soundblaster Live card (in some versions like mine, line in volume is VERY low, I had to sell mine and buy the Turtle Beach card, google soundblaster line in volume for details; made a big difference). Do not bother with built in soundcards, AC97, and the such.
Audacity has various noise reduction capabilities. Wave Repair is shareware but has a free version that allows to at least detect end of song and split the file.
The process was not easy, but with a fast machine it was OK. A large monitor comes in handy when you're editing large waves...
