OT: I drove a semi truck (with a trailer)! Posted by Caarma [Email] (#592) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Caarma) on Sun, 1 May 2005 19:54:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As part of my new job with Detroit Diesel, I attended a ride-and-drive at a supplier and I actually got to drive a Kenworth T2000 with a 14.6L engine. Because it had an automated transmission I was allowed to drive it on the test track without a Commercial Driver's License. It was quite an experience. You feel the heft and you see the length of the 60 ft. trailer in the mirrors, but you also feel the torque. Staying in your lane requires some steering correction, but not as bad as I thought. Turns have to take place later, but the ride with the suspension seats is not bad at all. What really makes the experience neat is the sound of the turbo beneath you. The engines have a great sound alone, but the turbo almost harmonizes with it. I'm not going to become a truck driver, but now I can check this off of my list of things to do before I die. :-)
One thing I didn't realize until I changed jobs is that these heavy duty Class 8 engines are all in-line 6 cylinders, not V6's or V8's.
