and tanks IIRC when I was a young Army officer back in 1970-71. The HEM (heavy equipment maintenance) company commander I knew told me that some of the 8V71T (t=turbo) motors in the tanks and our SP 155s had to be torn down after 500-1,000 miles becase of being abused by their young witless draftee drivers. He said essentially the same engine in a Greyhoud bus would run a quarter-million miles without having the heads off. Another problem was engines running wild, or "open pump." Our SP 155 drivers carried small sheets of thick plywood to cover the air intake in case the throttle stuck open and the engine ran wild - supposedly worked better than stuffing a couple of jackets or shirts into the intake to stifle the runaway. I never saw one detonate or run wild in person, but I did see the plywood sheets.
Ask me some time about the periodic requirement to manually exercize the recoil mechanism when a howitzer hadn't been fired recently....
