The way horsepower was rated in the '60s gave a much higer rating that the brake horsepower (BHP rating we use today. That's why muscle cars routinely were rated at 300 or 400 horsepower, but they don't have nearly the output of a modern car with that much horsepower. It's easierst to think of them using a different scale back then.
