Once you get into the 500-600hp range you are at the limits of what can really be used on a street car. Going higher just means you need to beef things up further and further to handle the power but you are getting to diminshing returns...
I feel like cars are getting to about the top of the range of usable HP and that the coming trend will be about making that kind of power with decent gas mileage. I think lighter weight and effecency will be future brass ring. Is has certainly got to a point where you see the next generation of a car coming out with 20-30hp across the engine range but have no improvement in acceleration due to picking up a few hundred pounds with the changes.
I realize that what I'm saying is more optimism and what I think would be good for the industry rather than what may actually happen...
