<< Also, japanese cars are basically offered in 3 trim levels, not unlike SAAB. US mfrs have all kinds of options and price adders. Maybe that's confusing or a turn-off to the buying public. Perhaps the the Big 3 buying experience at the dealer is a major pain. >>
Actually, my experience in ordering the exact Ford truck, as I wanted it, with only the options I wanted, was great. Try that with a Toyota. You get bad seats in a Tacoma no matter what level you get. I still have that truck 9 years later. Manufacturers use the limited trim lines to pack the upper levels with fooferall like DVD navigation systems at $2600. That $2600 buys a lot of maps and GPS devices. Unfortunately the upper trim levels are also where the interesting engine and performance options are.
The listed options are not the pain, the ADM (additional dealer markup) or geographic demand surcharge. both which are pure profit will make me walk away no matter what. Then they wonder why the Thunderbird and Chevy SSR would not sell... duuhhh. And then there is the $500 fabric protectant and paint sealer...
